DESCRIPTION:

made for simplicity, and functionality, the M113A1 isn't something that will catch
anyones eye, with the lack of big guns and a ferocious engine growl.
it's usage doesn't really stretch beyond being a lightly protected battle taxi.
get in quick, drop off troops, and hide. maybe pop a few baddies with the .50 in the process.
it's real asset is the 11 guys sitting in the rear.
it's amphibious too.

The M113A1 is the upgraded version of the 1960 M113, with the most
significant difference being a diesel engine, instead of a gasoline engine.
This reduced the possibility of the fuel exploding if hit, which would make an awful mess on the inside.
not much of a fighting vehicle, the M113 is more or less an armoured box with tracks,
intended to get infantry to the battlefield, while protecting the guys inside from
nearby explosions, and light machine gun fire.

It has a large rear ramp, with a door in it, if the ramp gets stuck somehow,
for easy disembark. when the hatch is opened, it makes a loud CLANK, that can be heard
miles away, just to make sure everyone knows the M113 is disembarking troops.
A large roof hatch allows infantry to have a look outside, take aim
at anything they don't like, and chat with the commander.
The commander has a hand-traversed cupola with an M2HB heavy machine gun on a 2-point flex mount.
with the trim vane extended, the M113A1 can swim.

the M113A1 is capable of swimming, after some preparations.
first, the trim vane has to be manually unfolded, and locked into position.
then it's bilge pumps must be switched on.
and of course, for the stupid, the rear ramp must be closed.
in the water, the vehicle is propelled by its tracks.
although the speed is so slow it wont last long in the water under fire.

the M113A1's chassis is made of the flammable material 5083 aluminum.
if the vehicle gets struck by a mine or RPG, the armour will catch fire,
especially in hot conditions. even after the internal fire extinguishers
has fired, the vehicle might continue burning, leaving the only option
to evacuate the vehicle.
On the M113A1, the US army created the following vehicles:

M901 TOW vehicle,
M981 FIST-V fire support (artillery) team vehicle,
M577A3 command post carrier

Crew positions:

Commander:

well, this guy sits atop the vehicle, tells the driver where to go, and occasionally take a
shot at any armed opposition stupid enough to walk around in the open.
the M2HB has a regular iron sight for aiming.

Driver:

the M113A1 is steered with differential steering levers, and has an additional lever
for sharp-turning at slow speed, and turning in place.
this lever is also used for turning while swimming.

Dismounts:

11 guys sitting in the rear, 5 on each side, 1 in the middle behind the commander.
weapons include M16's, M60 probably, M-72, and other equipment the US was fielding in the
60's-mid 70's.
